In order to tie my excitement for the new Harry Potter flick coming out today, I originally wanted to title the article “Fantastic PlayStation Vita and where to find them – hint, not Target” but alas, Allegra turned me down, typical smug Gryffindor. Anyway, over the past few days, several tipsters had told me that their local Target was liquidating their stock of PlayStation Vita. At first, I chalked the whole thing up to local inventory fluctuation, but it’s looking like this is more of a widespread affair.
I’ve now seen reports pop up from several other outlets with readers sending in pictures of PS Vita being marked down to just $60. For a console that should cost north of $150, a $90 markdown isn’t a pre-Black Friday sale but a clear sign that Target (and likely others) are looking to open up their inventory and it makes good sense. Sony is paying a lot of money to have PlayStation kiosks and that money is better used to give shelf space to PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS VR, all consoles that they’re actively supporting and not PS Vita.
As far as Sony is concerned, PS Vita died four years ago – they just never officially threw it a funeral and before you tell me that it’s selling in Japan, a device that sells in the thousands is a device that shouldn’t exist. And yes, I’ve owned a PS Vita, PSPgo, and PSP from launch so it’s not that I’m not a fan but a dedicated console in today’s world can’t compete with the pace of mobile. Sony was smart to stop support of Vita when it did – now they’re finally just getting rid of all traces of it. Do you ever use your PS Vita?
