Now CBS wants to acquire Sony Pictures?

Not a few days after rumors spread that Sony was looking to bring Sony Pictures under the same roof as PlayStation and there are new reports that CBS is looking to acquire the film studio. To put things into perspective, until very recently, CBS and Viacom were negotiating a merger but the deal eventually fell apart which brings us back to CBS chief Leslie Moonves. Claire Atkinson from NY Post writes:

On the Money’s Tokyo tipsters claim Moonves jetted over to Japan with the aim of beating the bushes on an acquisition of Sony Pictures.

Our snoops in the legal community tell us that after many years of saying Sony’s entertainment assets are not for sale, the company is now quietly suggesting it will consider pitches.

The wrinkle could be whether Moonves will take all the movie and TV assets, since Sony might want to keep the highly profitable TV piece, which makes shows such as Jeopardy!

Unsparingly, CBS is denying the rumors and as always, rumors like this should be taken with a grain of salt. On one hand, Sony ridding itself of their studio makes sense if they want to further simplify their business and focus. On the other hand, it sure doesn’t hurt to have a movie studio in your pocket – after all, content is king and I’m not sure how much the extra cash on hand with help Sony currently. Of course even if Moonves is meeting with Sony about the potential sale of Sony Pictures, it doesn’t mean the deal will actually go through, but I sure do like the idea of SPE coming under Andrew House at PlayStation a lot better than Sony just selling them off. Do you think Sony is better off selling their film studio or should they try to better leverage it by keeping it as is or bring it under the watchful eyes of House?
