In this weekend’s box office results, the theaters were filled once again due to the magic of Disney’s Pixar, as Brave made its debut at number one. This marks the thirteenth time in a row that a Pixar movie has debuted at number one, an impressive streak that dates back to the original Toy Story. Two other high-profile films also made their debuts this weekend, though neither of them made a huge splash, as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World both performed below studio expectations. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World was especially disappointing, finishing in tenth place with just over $3.8 million despite the star power of Steve Carell and Keira Knightley.

Despite the starpower of Adam Sandler and Tom Cruise, both of their new movies failed to make a huge splash at this weekend’s box office, bested instead by last week’s number one and number two, Madagascar 3 and Prometheus respectively. While R-rated comedies and musicals aren’t exactly giant box office draws, Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy were expected to perform much better than they actually did. Sandler’s That’s My Boy is one of the few disappointments from Sony Pictures this year, as Sony’s film division has been on a role, with most new films debuting at number one. On the opposite end of the spectrum, animated kids flick Madagascar 3 performed very well in it’s second week, dropping just 41 percent and repeating as this week’s box office champion.

In a bit of a surprise, the heralded return of director Ridley Scott to the science fiction film realm was thwarted by talking zoo animals, as Scott’s Prometheus came in second place to Dreamwork’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted in a huge box office weekend. Still, regardless of its second place finish, Prometheus still had the highest debut for a film in the Aliens franchise and was the second highest opening in Ridley Scott’s directorial career. The first place finisher, Madagascar 3, finished with over $60 million in its debut. Though down just slightly from the previous film in the popular animated franchise, the number is still highly impressive considering it is the third installment in the family-friendly film series. The top five films this week earned about $160 million, a huge improvement from the same time last year.

Men in Black 3 is shaping up to be a formidable summertime hit, landing as the number one movie at the box office. MiB 3 was able to score $72 million during the Memorial Day weekend, despite a 10 year absence in the franchise which finally dethroned The Avengers, after 3 weeks at number one. MiB 3 stars the charismatic and always charming Will Smith as agent J while Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin help play agent K, thanks to the films time travel plot. While during the build up to the films release, Sony Pictures marketing team did their best to have the stars front and center on as many shows and commercials as possible, its sometimes the little moments that slip away which turn out to be a gem.
Thanks to an unscripted AOL interview, we can see Josh Brolin interviewing Will Smith about his reaction if an alien invasion were to occur. Will whose starred in many alien blockbusters like Independence Day gave a response that caught his co-star off guard . Watch the interview now.
Say you’re a Spider-Man fan and have already seen ‘Men in Black 3‘ the number one movie at the US and worldwide box office in IMAX 3D which included a 6-minute preview of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘ and still want more Spidey action. If this describes you in any shape or you just have an affinity for the web slinger, then we have good news for you. Sony Pictures has released a new trailer, revolving around Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy’s (Emma Stone) relationship with a much more light-hearted tone at its center. With The Avengers already proving that you don’t need the cliche and dark tones of the upcoming The Dark Knight to be successful, the new ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘ Australian trailer features a nice change of pace while demonstrating the incredible chemistry between the two young stars. It should go without saying that new footage means more spoilers for those who prefer to stay oblivious to the storyline and instead, want to hit theaters on July 3rd to watch the new saga unfold before their eyes.
It looks like there’s a new number one in town. While Marvel’s The Avengers has dominated most of May, Will Smith and his gang of interstellar agents prove that he and the Men in Black franchise are still hugely popular at the box office. MIB 3 finished Memorial Day weekend at the top, with The Avengers coming in at second place, while horror film Chernobyl Diaries is the only other new film to finish in the top ten. With MIB 3 finishing at number one, this gives Sony Pictures another top debut in a highly successful year for the film division.

Men in Black 3, the long awaited sequel in the MiB series is finally in theaters today which has Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones once again reprising their roles as Agent J and Agent K. This time around, Agent J travels in time to MIB’s early years in the 1960s so that he can stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history. Movie goers are given plenty of different options for their viewing experience which includes 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. Those who opt for the IMAX 3D will also be treated to a 6-minute sneak peek at Sony Pictures other upcoming blockbuster, The Amazing Spider-Man.
MiB 3 also marks the return of Will Smith to the big screen, after taking a break in 2008 which saw him star in another Sony Pictures film, Seven Pounds. In 2013, Will Smith will once again be back with After Earth which will see the actors son, Jaden Smith star along side him. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense and Signs), the sci-fi film is tagged as “after a crash landing, a father and son explore an alien planet,” and will be released by Sony Pictures.
The big question now is, can Men in Black 3 finally take on Disney’s The Avengers after the film has dominated three consecutive weekends as the number film? New releases like Tim Burtons Dark Shadows and Peter Burgs Battleship have so far been unable to match the super-hero packed film and while the latest entry in the MiB series released 10 years ago in 2002.
Seeing how Will Smith is one of my favorite actors, I can tell you that I’ve already got my 3D tickets for tonight at the famous Arclight Hollywood Dome. After the jump, a good ol Men in Black music video.
In what can only be thought of as a huge win for gamers and filmgoers alike, Sony Pictures has recently just signed Chronicle director Josh Trank to direct the film version of Team ICO’s critical darling Shadow of the Colossus. According to Deadline, the studio is currently looking for writers to work with the director in this visual effects-heavy production.
I’m not quite sure how Sony Pictures is going to translate the Shadow of the Colossus story into film as the game itself was a lonely experience throughout; with the horse Agro as the protagonist’s only companion. And what little (though powerful and provocative) story the game did have was found at the end of the adventure.

With Men in Black 3 almost in theaters, Sony Pictures is already looking at their next big blockbuster, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ Set to be released on July 6th, the rebooted franchise will once again tell the origin story of Spider-Man with a new world where Peter has yet to meet Marry Jay and instead has Gwen Stacy as his love interest. Looking to promote the film and entice audience goers, Sony is releasing a 6 minute IMAX 3D preview in front of MiB 3 in IMAX 3D. Despite MiB tracking to be a big hit, Sony is looking at other methods to promote the high stakes franchise which has lead to the video above. What do you think? Do the duo knock it home or what?
Movie fans have something to be excited about this weekend as Will Smith makes a return to the big screen after a laying low since starring in ‘Seven Pounds‘ way back in 2008. Now, Big Willy is once again suiting up and returning as Agent J in Men in Black 3, which can be viewed in 2D, 3D, and 3D IMAX. With a lot of excitement around the film, Sony Pictures is taking the opportunity to build a little more buzz for the return of another one of their franchise properties, Spider-Man. The web slinging hero is scheduled to make his rebooted appearance on July 3rd, with an all new adventure and storyline which was shot in native 3D. To help wet viewers appetite, Sony has announced on their Facebook page that you can:
“See an exclusive 6-minute sneak peek of The Amazing Spider-Man when you experience Men In Black in IMAX 3D starting Thursday at Midnight!”
It should be noted that this isn’t limited to MIB 3 premiere night and the 6-minute preview of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘ will stay throughout the movie’s run in IMAX screens. Men in Black 3 premieres on Friday, May 25th.
For the third straight week, Marvel’s The Avengers takes the top spot in this past weekend’s box office results, besting three highly touted new releases fairly easily. The Avengers currently ranks sixth all-time on the domestic box office charts. Making its debut in a distant second place this past weekend was the Hasbro board game based Battleship, followed by Sasha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator, which made its debut last Wednesday. Romantic comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting finished in fifth place on its first weekend.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about Sony Pictures’ take on the life of Steve Jobs, starting out with the movie being based on the former Apple CEO’s biography by Walter Isaacson. While having a great source is a good place to start a film adaptation, the writer and director at the end of the day are the ones who truly bring that vision to fruition. Luckily for Sony Pictures, they’ve been able to snatch up their long time collaborator, Aaron Sorkin, who wrote Oscar winners The Social Network and Moneyball, as the film’s writer. Besides his film work, Sorkin is also known for creating TV drama The West Wing. After the jump, Sorkin reveals how he plans to bring the iconic CEO to life on the big screen.
