CES 2015: Sony To Bet Heavily on Android for its TV Lineup?

Sony_Android_TV_Rumor

In just a few hours, we’ll get to know Sony’s 2015 plans for its television lineup. While it’s all but expected for the company to update their 4K televisions, Android TV is something less talked about. In the years passed, Sony bet heavily on Google TV and released a full lineup of televisions that used the OS from Google. With the platform being a complete dud, Sony and other partners of Google TV were badly burned by the experience.

With a new name, Android TV, it’s looking like Sony will jump back into a strategic alliance once again with a slew of TVs that will contain the new OS. Details after the jump.

We Unbox the Sony E-mount 18-200mm Lens (SEL18200)

Prior to CES, I begin the week long ritual of checking and playing with equipment needed to capture the show. This can include basic things such as adapters or fairly expensive additions like new lenses. For the past few years, I’ve captured CES using an NEX-5N with a 18-55mm lens. What I’ve liked about the lens is how lightweight it is, complementing the NEX line. Still, I’ve been missing out some necessary shots due to a lack of zoom on the lens. Arguably, the best all around lenses in the market are 18-200 which allow for close up shots, be it video or photo while giving you a considerable boost when need to capture something from a distance.

With that mindset, I purchased the Sony SEL18200 E-mount lens to help capture CES in a new way. Make no mistake, the lens weighs considerably more and it’s a far larger piece to take around. Yet with built-in image stabilization and zoom that doesn’t sacrifice close-up shots, this new E-mount lens might be the difference between missing a moment and capturing it all.

You can check out our unboxing in the video above and we’ll have a more in depth take on the lens post-CES.

Sony Teases ‘8 Million Reasons’ at CES 2015

Sony_CES_2015_8_Million

For those not familiar, CES which will take place in Las Vegas next week is the world’s largest consumer electronic show (CES, see?). CES usually sets the stage for Sony’s strategy and tone for that year and televisions have always been a big part of that. Two years ago, Sony debuted their first consumer 4K television and followed up at CES 2014 with improved models and considerably lower price points. As the above image teases, Sony wants to give us 8 million reasons at this years CES. It’s worth noting that 8 million also happens to be the number of pixels in for something to be considered 4K.

Coincidence? Probably not. Lets talk after the jump.

CES Is a Week Away; What Sony Announcements Are You Hoping For?

Sony_CES_2015

It’s crazy to think but CES, the worlds largest electronic show is just a week away. In the past, CES has set the stage for big reveals from Sony, including new smartphones, tablets, and drool worthy 4K TV’s. This years CES remains a mystery in many aspects. First, Sony has done a much better job at handling internal leaks while at years past, many products made their way to the internet in some form or fashion prior to their reveal.

The second and the elephant in the room is Sony Electronics future. With consumers heavily favoring Apple and Samsung products and televisions turning into a commodity product with razor thin profits, Sony has been unable to keep pace with its competitors. The one bright spot for the company remains to be PlayStation which has enjoyed enormous success thanks to the PS4. Because a shift in consumer habits and PlayStation remaining the one true growth division, Sony earlier in the year announced a strategic shift which would see them reduce their lineup of smartphones and televisions and instead invest in PlayStation.

Will this be present at this years CES? It’s hard to say but we’ll find out soon enough. Till then, we want to hear from you about CES and Sony’s future. Meet us after the jump.
