PlayStation VR to Offer ‘Cinematic Mode’ With a 226-inch Screen

Official_PlayStation_VR_7

One of the lesser known features of PlayStation VR will be its cinematic mode which in short can create your own personal cinema at home. The feature is designed to work with traditional PS4 titles and will be offered in three different sizes.

There are a trio of (simulated) viewing sizes: 117 inches, 163 inches and 226 inches. The translated post says that the default 163-inch size will encompass your entire field of view, while the gargantuan one will require you to move your head from side to side if you want to see everything at once. So, kind of like sitting in the front row of a movie theater. At the other end of the spectrum, the smallest size reorients the screen to your head movement. If you get tired while wearing the PSVR you can apparently lay down while wearing it and the display will match your horizontal perspective.

Sony Xperia Z6 to Double as PlayStation VR Controller?

PlayStation_VR_XPeria_Play

So here’s a wild rumor for you in regards to the next generation Xperia device, which Jenia Gracia from Mobile & Apps has dubbed the Xperia Z6.

One major feature that will be loaded in the upcoming unit will be its capability to serve as a controller to the VR headsets of the PlayStation gaming console

Besides not having heard anything about this myself, the rumor simply doesn’t make sense to me – here’s why.

PlayStation Vue to Get NFL Network and NFL RedZone

NFL_Network_Logo

Nearly a month ago, Sony revealed that PlayStation Vue, their streaming TV service had surpassed 100,000 subscribers in the US with most insiders believing that the actual number being actually closer to 120k. Now with the NFL season nearly upon us, Sony is looking at new ways to entice users and make their service more complete.

Nintendo Finally Crashes From Pokemon Go High

Nintendo_Stock_Pokemon_Go

It’s rather surprising that it took financial markets and tech pundits this long to catch on to the whole Pokemon Go phenomenon that’s pushed Nintendo’s valuation up by nearly $12 billion. But now that both sides have gotten their heads around it, that Pokemon high is coming to an end.

After all, for the past week, there has been no shortage of coverage around how Nintendo is now valued above Sony which is ludicrous no matter how you look at it.

According to ‘Developers,’ Sony is the Only Remaining Hurdle to Cross-Platform Play

E3_2016_Xbox_PlayStation

Fun fact, adding an ‘s’ at the end of a word can fundamentally change the gravity of a title. Kyle Orland writing for Ars Technica:

Back in March, Microsoft announced that it would allow generic cross-platform play on its Xbox Live network. The move was essentially a public challenge for Sony to similarly open up the PlayStation Network

So far, so good, and Kyle is right. Microsoft has been in need of any publicity win it can take with Xbox and calling out Sony for something that is ‘seemingly’ pro-consumer was a smart move by them.

Now, some major game developers are stressing that any technical hurdles to this cross-platform play have been overcome.

Now let the eye rolling begin.

Nintendo PlayStation Prototype Tear Down

Nintendo_PlayStation

For the unaware, before Sony launched PlayStation to take on Nintendo and eventually drive Sega out of the console business, they were working with Nintendo on a console to take on Sega. Jon Fingas writing for Engadget:

While it’s evident that Sony had the largest role in the machine, this was very much a collaboration — you’ll find a mix of both Nintendo and Sony chips in this prototype, on top of the occasional third-party component.

Why Kingdom Hearts 3 Was a No Show at E3 2016

kingdom Hearts 3At E3 2016, Square Enix had plenty to talk about – most notably Final Fantasy XV, which is set to launch in just a few months’ time. For Square, a lot is riding on their game that’s now been a decade in development. Unsurprisingly, Final Fantasy VII didn’t make an appearance but that’s likely because the game is still early in development. This brings us to Kingdom Hearts 3, another no show game though unlike FF7, it’s a game that’s fast approaching the end of its development cycle. So why didn’t Square bring the highly anticipated game to E3?

Why Hardly Any Leaks Came From PlayStation in 2016

Andrew_House

Speaking with Japanese site AV Watch,  Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House commented on why we saw no leaks leading up to E3, including details about PlayStation 4 Neo and Death Stranding.

PR team has introduced a strict new information management system, and it has ‘begun with almost no [leaks] in its favor.’

Horizon: Zero Dawn Dev Talks Female Hero

It’s quite apparent that Horizon: Zero Dawn is meant to be drastically different than previous titles developed by Guerrilla Games and you can tell that by just looking at the game’s main character, Aloy. Game director Mathijs de Jonge speaking with GameStop:

When we started with a concept we felt like we had a pretty fresh mix of ingredients; the BBC nature documentary kind of feel, and then the sci-fi elements with the robots. We also felt like we need a fresh main character. We’ve been making Killzone games; we’ve done male protagonists for quite a while. Now, we wanted to do something else.

PlayStation 4 NEO Specs & Overview Leak

PS4_Neo_Overview

One of my favorite lines from Avengers: Age of Ultron is when Stark is in the Hulkbuster suit, fighting an enraged Hulk that grabs him from behind, where Iron Man is most vulnerable and starts to rip out pieces of the larger suit to which he says

 Dick move, Banner

Somewhere at Sony, somebody is feeling like Stark, betrayed by a developer or worse, an internal employee who has just leaked a ton of information. This frankly isn’t just bad for them in terms of putting info out there before they’ve been ready to present, but also bad from a competitive standpoint against Microsoft, who may have not known some of the specifics.

Sony Ends Support for Ustream on PS4

PS4 - Ustream

I’ve been meaning to write about this for the past week but Sony will be ending support for Ustream on PS4.

The question is, will anybody actually care?

Not All PlayStation VR Games Will Support DualShock 4

Official_PlayStation_VR_8Just yesterday, news spread that any game coming to PlayStation VR would support the PS4’s DualShock controller. This meant that even if a game was intended for use with PlayStation Move controllers or the new Aim Controller, you wouldn’t need any of those additional equipment to enjoy them. While ‘good for the consumers,’ the news never made much sense to me as it would be a limit on what developers could do. What if they’d created a medieval type game where one Move controller acted as your shield and the other as your sword? Now you’d also have to dumb down that experience to fit the DualShock 4 – in turn shifting how the game would play and feel.

As it turns out, that’s not the case after all.

No Man’s Sky Game Size Revealed

No_Mans_Sky_Space_Battle

For some reason, people are really into articles like this and since I love to please all of you, here it is. The file size for No Man’s Sky, the ambitious and often delayed indie title from Hello Games has been revealed. It’s worth noting that despite the game having gone gold, the final space required could be much larger in size as other components are often delivered via day one downloads.

Adam Boyes Is Leaving Sony

Adam_Boyes

Adam Boyes, VP of third party relations & developer technology group at PlayStation, announced via Twitter that he’s departing from the company he’s been with for the past four+ years.

While Boyes, a good guy all around (after all, he’s Canadian) will be missed, his departure is likely timely and in fact even makes sense. Let me explain.

Twitch App Comes to PlayStation Vita

PlayStation_Vita_Twitch_App

In a bit of left field news, Twitch, the popular game streaming platform has released an app for PlayStation Vita. A welcome announcement for owners of the powerful handheld, since as far as Sony is concerned, the Vita stopped existing years ago.
