Kevin Butler Leaves Flooring Company, Returns to PlayStation. Long Live Play

It had been many months sense we’d heard from the vice president of all things PlayStation, Kevin Butler. To get a full understanding of the story, we first have to look all the way in 2009 when Mr. Butler joined PlayStation. He’s first position then with the company was Director of Game Accuracy. Due to rising popular with the gamers and non-gamers alike, Butler would soon find himself in the VP position and opposite of Jack Tretton, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America. Kevin Butlers fame would continue to grow and maybe even peaked during his 2010 Sony E3 press conference speech. KB as he’s known with the kids and the internets these days was most noticeably absent from Sony’s 2011 E3 press coference. KB who is known to represent PlayStation’s many different branches had held many different VP positions in the last few years including,

  • VP of The Cold Hard Truth
  • VP of First Person Shooter Relations
  • VP of Blu-ray Superiority
  • VP of Epic Gaming for All
Business magazines were quick to point to an internal rift within Sony and PlayStation. Some thought that KB was making a power move while others though that Jack Tretton might have found KB a cozier position at a carpeting company. One thing would soon become clear, KB would move away from PlayStation and begin a career as President of Economic Flooring. With the titan VP everything leaving PlayStation, it was clear that his presence would be missed and it was. In the months of Summer, Sony and the PlayStation division would come to announce many new and exciting initiatives and exclusive titles like,
Many within corporate Sony began to think of a successor for KB. Maybe somebody internal like Jeff Rubenstein or Rey Gutierrez could get promoted and a clear succession would take place or perhaps the company would have to reach for it’s many celebrities who already represent the brand like Justin Timberlake or Payton Manning. With back to school time in full swing and the Holiday shopping season around the corner, Jack Trettons hand was forced and the President of Sony had only one move to make.
As Kevin Butler put it:
“Here’s to gamers.”
“Here’s to five more minutes.”
“Here’s to giant TVs in tiny apartments.”
“Here’s to calluses on top of blisters on top of calluses.”
“Here’s to knowing when life gets tougher the weapons get better.”
“Here’s to the gamer that lives inside all of us.”
“Here’s to staying up till 3AM to win a trophy that isn’t real. But is.”
In what can only be a called a stunning revelation and potential corporate shakeup, it seems that Kevin Butler has returned to PlayStation with a new motto.
