DC Universe Online is Sony Online Entertainment Massively Multiplayer Online RPG for the PlayStation 3 and PC. So far, the game has met with mixed to positive results with critics and consumers alike. As it stands, the game costs $49.99 with a $14.99 monthly fee.

As a gamer who’s never been interested in MMORPG’s, I had never even given any thought of purchasing or playing DC Universe Online because of the monthly fee, as well as the lengthy dedication the game requires of it’s players.

But I think my mind’s about to change.

According to Sony Online Entertainment, DC Online Universe is going free to play starting in October. This means, players can download and play the game for free, with some microtransaction features for those who are willing to pay for extra and exclusive content. SOE has broken it down to three access levels:

• Free Access – Players can download and play the game for free!!! And they’ll get the upcoming updates. But no DLC packs or extra content.

• Premium Access – If a player spends more than $5 in the in-game store, this access level opens up to him/her. This provides players with experience and benefits for their characters as well as more inventory and character slots. (Once opened up, players accounts are permanently upgraded to Premium Access)

• Legendary Access – If a player pays for the $14.99 per month game pass, this opens up Legendary Access. This access levels provides players all the DLC packs for no additional price payments.

Sony has said that subscriber numbers have been on the rise, and that they have even migrated to bigger servers to meet the rising player demand.

As a big fan of anything FREE, I am now extremely excited to give DC Universe a try next month. If I like the game, I might even spend the $5 or more dollars to upgrade my account to Premium Access. But I’m still not sure if I want to spend $14.99 monthly on one game.
