After a few weeks of absence, Sony Pictures once again dominates the box office, this time with the Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill-lead “21 Jump Street.” The film opened very strong, earning over $36 million for the weekend; however, this is the first weekend that the box office was down compared to last year. Still, the one major new release in “21 Jump Street” managed to find success, besting “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” which sat on top for two straight weeks.

The Sony Pictures comedy, a movie remake of the classic TV show, faired extremely well in its opening week, topping 2007’s Jonah Hill-lead “Superbad.” The film also reviewed very well, receiving a fresh 87 score from Rotten Tomatoes, somewhat rare for a blockbuster comedy.
“Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” fell to second place this week with $22.7 million, but the animated film is nearing the $200 million domestic gross mark, making the film the most successful Dr. Seuss adaptation to date. On the other end of the spectrum, highly publicized flop “John Carter” fell to third with $13.5 million. Disney is reportedly going to take a $200 million loss from the film, despite moderate worldwide earnings.
“Project X” and “Act of Valor” kept there spots in the top five; however, both films fell roughly 50 percent from last week.
- 21 Jump Street ($36.3 million)
- Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax ($22.7 million)
- John Carter ($13.5 million)
- Project X ($4.1 million)
- Act of Valor ($3.7 million)
