Jenova Chen Believes PSN Has “More Artistic and Adult-focused Taste”

Jenova Chen (pictured left), one of the creators behind the mega popular PlayStation 3 exclusives Journey, Flower, and Flow, recently talked about Thatgamecompany’s take on the gaming industry as a whole. Inevitably, the topic lead to PSN (PlayStation Network), Xbox Live, and WiiWare, which barely registers among online gaming portals with exciting content. Chen, who is no stranger to digital distribution, seeing how all of his games are only available via PSN, believes that the exepreince offered by Sony online is unrivaled by competitors.

 Sony has a more artistic and adult-focused taste. They care about how grown-ups feel toward their games.

Besides the mentioned games, PSN is home to a series of exclusive and high quality games like Fat Princess, PixelJunk Shooter, and Dead Nation. Chen went on to say;

 The player who owns a PlayStation 3 [and is playing PSN titles] is more likely to be interested in artistic games compared to Wii and Xbox 360,

More from Chen and Sony, after the jump.

Journey

Of course, Sony couldn’t agree more with Chen, despite his company finishing off their three title exclusive agreement which could see the company go multi-platform on future games. Jack Buser, director of PlayStation digital platforms said that the

 PSN audience is indeed more adult, and many of our best-selling titles appeal to this demographic. Many PlayStation and PSN games have themes that require a user to think and feel about a deep, immersive gameplay experience, and we see that exemplified in the success of titles like Flower, Journey, and Heavy Rain. Titles like these can only be found on PlayStation, and our users enjoy the emotional and thematic sophistication of their games, especially with our digital offerings.

Despite Sony’s personal take on this matter, Jack Buser does have a point. Its been widely recorded that unless a game features Mario as a character, most Wii owners don’t care for other content, which is extremely evident with the lack of 3rd party sales and support on the Nintendo platform. On the other hand, despite wide 3rd party support, the Xbox 360 is easily predominantly used by male teenagers who only want to play Call of Duty or Battlefield, not leaving room for more creative content, making it hard for companies like Q-Games and Thatgamecompany to support the console.

Do you agree that PSN is more artistic and adult oriented than Xbox Live and WiiWare?
