Weekend Box Office: ‘Ice Age’ Freezes ‘Spider-Man’ in Debut

Where can a saber-toothed tiger, a mammoth,  a sloth, and a squirrel defeat a spider? In this weekend’s box office results of course, as the fourth movie in the Ice Age franchise bested Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man for the top spot. Ice Age: Continental Drift is another of many animated number one films this year, joining the likes of Brave, Madagascar 3, and The Lorax. However, while the top finish may seem promising at first, Continental Drift debuted noticeably lower than all of the aforementioned films and all of the previous films in the Ice Age franchise.

Hit the jump to check out a full rundown of this weekend’s box office results.

In it’s second full weekend, Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man finished in second place, falling 44 percent to to finish at $34.6 million. While the film isn’t having nearly the same type of box office success as the previous films in the series, Amazing Spider-Man is doing fairly well on its own merits, passing $200 million domestically. Strong marketing, good word of mouth, and stellar reviews should keep Spider-Man in the top five for the next few weeks.

Finishing in third place this past weekend was Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted, which dropped just 30 percent to finish at $22.4 million. The film is still currently the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all-time, with a domestic gross of nearly $160 million.

In fourth place was Disney Pixar’s Brave, which surprisingly took only a slight hit from Ice Age‘s debut. Brave finished with $11.2 million in its fourth weekend. In fifth place was ensemble action/thriller Savages, which did fairly well in its second weekend with $9.3 million despite sub-par reviews and bad word of mouth.

No other new films debuted in the top ten, though look for The Dark Knight Rises to dominate theaters and next week’s box office results when it releases this Friday.
