The Weekend Box Office: ‘The Dark Knight Rises” Still on Top, Box Office Down Overall

In this week’s box office results, The Dark Knight Rises retains its top spot in its second week, despite the tragedy that occurred last week in Aurora, Colorado. The film still pales in comparison to its record-breaking predecessor, though last week’s tragedy and the competition from the 2012 Olympic games have kept box office numbers in check. However, while The Dark Knight Rises has found success, the rest of the box office hasn’t fared quite as well. Numbers across the board are down from last year, and newly debuting films did poorly amidst the competition and controversy.

Hit the jump to see how well these films did in a full rundown of this past weekend’s box office results.

Dropping 61 percent from last weekend’s total, The Dark Knight Rises finishes in first place with $62 million. Through ten days, the film has grossed $290 million, well below the ten day total for 2008’s The Dark Knight. Still, despite everything, the film has managed to perform fairly well, finishing last weekend with the number three opening all-time.

Two former number one films took two top five spots this weekend, with animated hit Ice Age: Continental Drift and R-rated comedy Ted finishing second and fifth respectively. Ice Age finished in second place in its third week, though the film made just over $13.3 million. Seth McFarlane’s Ted also did fairly well, finishing in fifth place in its fifth weekend with $7.3 million. Ted is now just behind The Hangover through a month in theaters in terms of R-rated comedies.

The two biggest new films each made the top five, though neither made a huge dent in terms of numbers. Despite the star power of The Watch, the film finished in third, with under $13 million. And the fourth film in a typically successful film franchise opened in fourth with $11.7 million. Both films performed disappointingly according to their studios.

Check back next week to see if The Dark Knight continues to rise and if Sony’s Total Recall remake can dethrone the bat.

2. Ice Age: Continental Drift ($13.3 million)

3. The Watch ($12.7 million)
