The PlayStation 3 started its life with a bang and things quickly fell apart with low availability and a high price tag compared to the Xbox 360. Fast forward 7 years later and despite being out one year less than the 360 and continuing to garner a higher price tag, the PS3 is now well ahead of its competitor in sales. In fact, the PS3 has currently sold 81.08 million units while the 360 has sold 79.79 million units. Now SCE President Andrew House has spoken on the matter and believes that the PS4 will outsell its predecessor. His reasonings, after the jump.
According to Andrew House, the PS4:
has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we’ve been able to achieve with PS3 and there’s a couple of reasons for that.
He went on:
one of the success stories for the business as a whole has been our ability to open up new geographies for video games over the last five years. You are seeing opportunities for new markets that we haven’t tapped into.
The other point is that we took several years to take PS3 from being a dual function device to a multi-functional entertainment device. PS4 arrives with a full suite of those non-game entertainment services right from day one.
And that’s important because there will be someone who wants this as a games device, but the fact it is a great place to view BBC iPlayer, for example, gives other family members reason to use it. That is crucial in broadening what the console’s reach could be.
With the PS4 starting at a lower price than the Xbox One while offering far more than its predecessor did during its launch, Sony rightly believes that the PS4 has a lot more room to grow. With rumors of expanded 4K support coming to the PS4 in the near future, like the PS2 and DVD and PS3 and Blu-ray, Sony may also be able to leverage the enthusiasm of the home theater community to secure more sales.
