PlayStation “Committed to New IP Establishment”

The Order 1886

Sony Computer Entertainment President, Andrew House recently sat down to talk about PlayStation and the future of the console. While the PlayStation 4 has been off to a stellar start, House knows that a consoles final results are all about “a marathon” and “not a sprint.” To help drive his point, we need simply need to look at the PS3 which sold out during launch, only to struggle in the years to come with high prices and confused 3rd party developers who struggled to master the consoles powers unlike Sony’s internal studios. Fast forward 7 years and the PS3 is now ahead of the Xbox 360 which has enjoyed a lower price point throughout its lifespan and been on the market for an additional year. House believes that the PS4 will be no different and new IP will be one of the key factors that will once again separate PlayStation from Xbox.

The PlayStation brand has been a goldmine for new IP from Sony’s first party studios. This includes games franchises like Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Gran Turismo, and Resistance to name a few. What all these titles share is their birth on PlayStation, with many of them selling in droves on the PS3 where they were first introduced. According to House:

We are more committed to new IP establishment and delivery than most other platform holders out there.

Already Sony is developing a new IP from Sony Santa Monica with The Order: 1886 while it’s believed that studios like Media Molecule who just introduced TearAway from the PS Vita as a brand new IP are also working on new content for the PS4. When it comes to new IP, the biggest challenge for studios is to garner attention and fan base towards a new world versus expanding already developed franchises. To that end, expect to see many returning characters come to the PS4 with already announced games like inFamous: Second Son and Uncharted 4 which will surely delight fans. Other titles to look forward to include the PS4 exclusive DriveClub, and Destiny which will begin its beta exclusively on PS3 and PS4 in 2014 before being released on all consoles.

Discuss:

Do gamers really want new IP when they continue to buy games like Call of Duty in droves?
