It should go without saying that the PS4 is off to a great start so far despite some highly anticipated games like DriveClub and Watch Dogs. One barometer of the consoles success has been the online mega retailer Amazon which has continued to receive a steady supply of PS4s since its launch. Luckily for Sony, but to the dismay of gamers, demand has continued to be high, resulting in the console continuing to be sold out at retailers and online. For its part, Amazon continues to get supplies in though inventory tends to be wiped clean within minutes. Now Amazon has released statistics for its PS4 sales and the results are staggering.
Though Amazon didn’t go as far as to break down their sales numbers, as they never do, they did reveal that at its peak, the PlayStation 4 was selling at a crazy pace of 1,000 consoles per minute. Despite selling out from all retailers, Sony’s healthy supply of PS4s compared to the PS3 launch has resulted in the company selling over 2.1 million units so far as breaking the record for the fastest selling console in history. Sony expects to reach 3 million units sold by year’s end, which, if inventory continues to be replenished, shouldn’t prove to be a problem as the 2.1 million units sold number is now more than two weeks old.
