Sony, alongside Panasonic, one of the early backers of Blu-ray, have announced a new optical disc format dubbed Archival Disc. While the new format is designed as a successor to Blu-ray technology, Sony and Panasonic currently have no plans on bringing the new disc to consumers. Instead, the two companies are targeting companies who want a better solution for long term storage.
The new Archival Disc aims to give companies who want to storage large volumes of data for long term storage a solution that Blu-ray currently does not. While a significant leap when compared to DVD, Blu-ray storage is generally limited to 50GB. Archival Disc starts with six folds its predecessor with 300GB discs which will launch in Summer 2015.
The two companies are promising “inter-generational compatibility” which will see discs with 1TB of storage in the years to follow. In addition to the scratch-resistant coding that Blu-ray pioneered, Archival Disc will also be temperature- and humidity-resistant.
Discuss:
Do you think Archival Discs has a place with consumers as well or do you simply see this as a technology that will stick in corporations?
