Sony Creates 185 Terabyte Data Tape

Looking to archive your entire life? Sony’s got you covered as the electronic giant has revealed a nano-sized tape technology that’s capable of storing more than any traditional hard drive or optical media could. According to Engadget, “by optimizing how it sputters argon ions onto film to create magnetic material, the company has produced “nano-grained” tape that’s 74 times denser than what you see today.” This tech breakthrough has resulted in a 185TB cartridge (not pictured above).

It’s worth noting that, while Sony plans on fully bringing this tech to the market, don’t expect to see it on retail shelves. Sony is instead focusing the technology appropriately – on supercomputers and archiving which need storage of massive amounts of data in an easily accessible form. Just recently, Sony, along with Panasonic, announced a new optical disc dubbed “Archival Disc” with up to 1TB of space on each disc. For those smart enough, I threw the visual provided by Sony (above) to help with the narrative though as far as I’m concerned, Sony could have shown kittens and rainbows and conveyed the same thing.

Do consumers need better archiving technology or are you okay with cloud storage and external hard drives?
