PlayStation VR Pre-Orders Draw Crowds in Japan

With the US becoming PlayStation’s most important and largest market, it’s no surprise that it was first on Sony’s list to receive VR pre-orders. Now with a solid E3 behind it, Sony has turned its attention towards Japan where PS VR became available for pre-order for the first time on Saturday and boy are things looking good.

According to the Mainichi News, one of Japan’s biggest newspapers, around five hundred people waited for pre-orders at the Yodobashi Camera in Tokyo’s Akihabara. It’s no surprise that Tokyo seems to have had the longest lines, but hundreds of people also lined up for the PlayStation VR in Osaka.

For Sony and others, VR is a long term play that won’t see any victors even in 6 months time. However, for Sony to have customers lining up purely to pre-order its headset can only be a good sign as it indicates that they’ve been successful at making a case for VR. Obviously those pre-ordering are early adopters but the key right now is to capture their imaginations in hopes of turning them into evangelists for the platform.

After all, while the big VR makers will play an important role in the success or failure of how VR is perceived, it will ultimately come down to consumer sentiment that will determine the medium’s longevity and how they convey their experience to others – and the first part of that is making sure people are buying the headset when it launches.
