Sony’s E-mount cameras are set to get a big boost in the future from Sigma. According to Sigma CEO Mr. Kazuto Yamaki:
The future of EF mount is beaming. So yes we will come out of FE mount objectives in the future.
For those unfamiliar with FE lenses:
FE stands for Full E-mount. In other words, the lens focuses the light across the full area of the Full-Frame sensor. The other lens, E-mount, focuses its light over the area equivalent to an APS-C sensor.
If you’v been wanting full-frame lenses, you’ve traditionally had to opt into Sony’s A-mount cameras which are a dying breed as E-mount continues to gain traction, so it’s nice to see Sigma put their support behind them. Of course Sigma has made plenty of E-mount lenses but this will be their first full-frame. As Jeremy Gray writes for Imaging Resource:
Until now, the company has only released cine lenses in FE mount and required users to mount Sigma lenses to their E-mount cameras via an adapter, which inevitably leads to a degradation of image quality and/or a general decrease in autofocus functionality.
