Future Xperia phones could offer an OLED display

After CES 2017, it’s hard to write off the prospects of OLED displays coming to any of Sony’s product lineup. The biggest challenge with OLED has always been creating them in high volume for larger sized products like TV at a profit, making the introduction of them to the Xperia line a far easier task to achieve. With Sony clearly having mastered and learned a lot from creating the A1E OLED TV which provides beautiful contrast and wizbang features that prevent onscreen burnage which is far more relevant for mobile devices with static UI, the idea of future Xperia phones getting an OLED display isn’t as far fetched as it was 6 months ago.

Xperia Blog writes:

Sony recently announced their first OLED television, with the fabulously designed A1 series. The use of OLED technology may also be extended to Xperia smartphones according to a report from Nikkan.co.jp.

The report suggests that Sony will launch a premium Xperia smartphone using an OLED display next year. This new display will be adopted in Sony’s flagship device, rather than the whole range according to the report.

If accurate, it certainly makes sense – introduce the more costly OLED display for flagship products which have a greater profit margin while also offering something unique that sets them apart from other Xperia phones and competitors.
