Playstation Store Update (05-08-2012)

This week’s Playstation Store update is headlined by a ton of amazing Playstation Network exclusives with the release of a unique first-person adventure called Datura, from Sony Santa Monica and Plastic, and a huge sale on every game from the PixelJunk series in anticipation of the upcoming release of PixelJunk 4am. Datura, developed by the studios responsible for the God of War series and hit PSN indie title Linger in Shadows, is a first-person adventure unlike any other. Datura challenges you with exploring the environment and unraveling the mystery of your existence. Check the trailer for yourself below.

For Playstation Plus members, you can get Datura at a discounted price ($7.99), as well as a discount and full game trial for Saints Row: The Third. Will You Be Picking Up Starhawk? (poll)

The highly anticipated and PlayStation 3 exclusive, Starhawk, is now officially available at retailers across the US. A semi followup to now 5 year old Warhawk, the original multiplayer king on the PlayStation 3, Starhawk has players taking on the roll of Emmett Graves, a rift mine on the Frontier. Unlike Warhawk which only featured online multiplayer, Starhawk builds with a full campaign which not only helps depict the world, but also familiarizes you with the games weapons and tactics. Like Warhawk, the true gem of the game can be found online where players can battle in 32-player maps, featuring the Razorback a jeep like vehicle with a mounted gun, Jet Bikes, Jetpacks and of course, the Starhawk itself which can transform to a walking robot. Did we also mention the games ability to play online with 2-player split-screen mode?

Sony Announces Crystal White PlayStation Vita

Available in Wi-Fi for ¥24,98 ($312) and 3G for ¥29,980 ($375), both models offer the same exact feature as the current PS Vita with just a different coat of paint. No word yet on if Sony has any multi color plans for the US though with E3 just around the corner, we should find out soon enough. Video, after the jump.

Deals: PixelJunk Game for $1 on PSN (now live)

It’s hard to believe that Q-Games, the developer behind the PixelJunk series on PlayStation is turning 10 years old today. With a new game titled 4am set to be released next Tuesday, May 15th, the small developers with grand games will be offering a host of their games for $1 on PSN. That’s right, you can be playing some of the highest rated PSN games for a dollar each. After the jump, the full list of games for $1 awaits you.

The PlayStation Archives – Fire Pro Wrestling Returns

Even though it’s considered the best wrestling game series in the world, Fire Pro Wrestling hasn’t seen much success in North America. In an industry where elaborate 3D graphics, licensed brands, and heavy product placement reign supreme, it was a breath of fresh air to see that 2D character sprites, environments, and mentality still had a place in gaming’s present.

Fire Pro Wrestling: Returns boasts deep customization options that allows players to create their own organizations, wrestlers, wrestling rings, and even referees. As a hardcore wrestling fan, I customized every wrestler in the roster to look, and fight like their real counterparts. Ever felt like recreating the Monday Night Wars (WWF vs WCW)? How about pitting Hollywood Hulk Hogan against Japan’s Jushin Thunder Liger? How about having WWE take on TNA Impact Wrestling? Now you can do it with Fire Pro Wrestling: Returns for the PlayStation 2.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Fan Trailer Gives Xbox Users More to Lust Over

It’s no secret that there has’t been anything exciting with the Xbox platform in years. Despite the millions that Microsoft has pored into the Kinect which automatically fills the mind with gimmicky gameplay, most users turn on their 360 to frag others in some form of FPS. Of course with every single Call of Duty and Battlefield game also being available on the PlayStation 3, it doesn’t leave the platform with much original content. In fact, when it comes to unique games, the PlayStation 3 is where the party has been the last sever years with games like LittleBigPlanet, Resistance, Killzone, inFamous, God of War, Twisted Metal, Heavy Rain and upcoming titles like The Last of Us and StarHawk. Of course, nothing quite says PlayStation 3 like the Uncharted franchise which has created a unique and authentic world with characters that gamers have come to love, not just generic big steroid body builders with the most ludicrous weapon combination you can think of. What really drives this point further is the fan made trailer that truly shows the depth and quality of this PlayStation exclusive franchise. So while the 360 continues to get Call of Duty 93: Mid Dawn Special Delta Ops (which of course will also be available on Sony’s console), the PS3 continues to flourish with unique AAA titles and we’re not even including PSN hits like Fat Princess, Dead Nation, Journey, Flower and PixelJunkShooter.

So what did you think of the trailer? Lets us know, after the jump.

Hanging With David Hayter (aka Solid Snake)

Believe it or not, David Hayter has been the voice of the iconic Solid Snake for the last 14 years. Hayter as Snake is perhaps the longest a voice actor had been associated with a character in an ever-evolving industry. That not only says a lot about the intricacies of the character itself, but the man behind the voice of the hero as well. In those 14 years, Hayter not only voiced Snake, but his biological father Big Boss in the Snake Eater/Portable Ops/Peace Walker games.

Despite his busy schedule as the host of the Canadian Videogame Awards and meeting fans during the Vancouver Fan Expo, David Hayter took a few minutes to chat with me to discuss a number of topics including his hosting duties, juggling busy schedules, Snake’s future.

David Hayter Kills Solid Snake

David Hayter, most notably known for his voice portrayal of Solid Snake who appears on the PlayStation classic and often times exclusive Metal Gear series recently hosted the Canadian Videogame Awards (CVA). Many might not know that despite his raspy voice which has brought Solid Snake to life, David is also an esteemed writer in Hollywood, having penned such films as X-Men, X2, and The Watchmen. To help him move along in his career, David jokingly killed off the hero who was once again ready to step in and overshadow David during his hosting time.

Insomniac Games ‘OverStrike’ PS3 Box Art Gets Leaked (updated)

Insomniac Games, the long-time PlayStation exclusive developer of such game franchises like Resistance and Ratchet & Clank, parted ways with Sony last year. Under a new deal, the talented developers would turn their attention to multi-platform game development (i.e. PS3 and Xbox 360) with EA as their publisher. With both Resistance and the Ratchet & Clank IP belonging to Sony, IG would announce OverStrike, a new shooter as their first title. Little is known about the game and little has been shown which will surely change at this years E3. One thing that does seem final, however, is the game’s box art for the PlayStation 3, which can be seen above.

Updated:

I’ve just been contacted by our friends at Insomniac Games, who’ve pointed us towards some new information. As it stands, the above box art is actually from a placeholder image released nearly a year ago when we first heard about this title and does not represent the final box art, which will surely change.

PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale Announced

The oft-rumored Super Smash Brothers-style PS3 game is now a reality. Sony announced PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on GT.TV tonight. Set to release during the holiday season of this year, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will star characters like Sly Cooper, Kraots, Sackboy, Fat Princess, Helghast Troopers, Sweet Tooth, Kratos, and much more.

According to the President of the game’s developer, SuperBot Entertainment, the game will feature characters, environments and themes from the PlayStation Universe. SuperBot has also said that they have not taken third-party characters off the table, so there’s a chance that we’ll see the likes of Nathan Hale, Solid Snake, and other characters in the final game. It will also feature a three-tiered super moves for every character in the game, with level 3 attacks being the most powerful and destructive.

Levels and environments included in the game are from each of the PS Universe including:

  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Buzz!
  • Patapon
  • God of War
  • Killzone
  • and much more!

Editorial: The Top iOS Games That Should Be On The Vita

The Vita’s been out for a few months now and with it came a slew of good games. (Note that I said good, not great.) Aside from Uncharted, Super Stardust, and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, I haven’t even touched my other Vita titles. In fact, as bad as it sounds, my PlayStation Vita has actually been gathering dust in the corner because of the lack of games that keep me coming back to the system.

These days I travel a lot, and I actually find myself playing portable games on my iPod Touch more often than the Vita. Why? Because the games available on the iOS are truly built for on-the-go gaming; they’re cheaper and they’re actually a lot more fun. Sure the touch-screen controls can be hit or miss, but it’s the gameplay and creativity (or fun factor) that keep me coming back for more.

With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of iOS games that I would love to play on the PlayStation Vita.

Uncharted Series Sells 17 Million Worldwide

Sony recently revealed that as of April 12, the Uncharted franchise has sold over 17 million units worldwide. Of course, this number includes all four games in the series including:

  • Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss (PlayStation Vita)

In order to celebrate this huge moment not only for Sony but for Naughty Dog as well, the developer announced that they will be releasing a “Game of the Year” edition of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception for the PS3. This newest edition will include all the DLC that’s been released for the game so far.

PlayStation Store Update (04-24-2012)

Yes, I know I’m a bit late with this week’s Playstation Store update, but it definitely wasn’t my fault. When I wasn’t spending my time yesterday trying to survive a zombie apocalypse or fighting off mythical beasts, I was on Skype on my Playstation Vita telling everyone how awesome my day was. Unfortunately, that means a Playstation Store update that’s a day late, but fortunately for all of you, all of this week’s great content (and there is definitely a lot of it this week) is already up and ready for you to download.

The biggest release this week is The Walking Dead, ‘A New Day’ from Telltale Games. This first episode a five-episode long series costs $4.99, or you can pre-purchase all five episodes for $19.99. The Walking Dead is already getting rave reviews, so be sure to, at the very least, check out the demo for the zombie-filled comic book adaptation.

For all you PS Vita owners out there, make sure to download Skype for free this week for some free video and voice calls through your gaming handheld. Playstation Plus subscribers have the usual discounts on games like Sonic Unleashed and Hot Shots Golf: Our of Bounds, and are also treated this week to a full game trial of last fall’s blockbuster first-person shooter Battlefield 3.

And if you’re low on funds, check out the demo to Capcom’s upcoming hack-and-slash adventure epic Dragon’s Dogma, available free of cost.

New Mortal Kombat Trailer Brings Old School Back To PlayStation Vita

NetherRealm Studios recently released an “old-school” trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat for the Vita. The new trailer features the MK ninjas (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Smoke, Rain, and Ermac) wearing their klassic ninja outfits, putting on a wreckshop on everyone that got in their way. And like the Klassic costume DLC for the PS3, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile will also feature their old-school fatalities.

  • Scorpion – Flamethrower fatality (MK1 + MK2 + MK4)
  • Sub-Zero – Head Rip fatality (MK1)
  • Reptile – Eating the head fatality (MK2)

NetherRealm Studios has said they’re bringing every feature, every fighter, every game-mode into the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat; with the addition of a few new game modes and fun stuff that takes advantage of the Vita’s capabilities. There’s the Test Your Slice and Test Your Balance mini-games that uses the touch-screen and the accelerometers for their unique gameplay experiences. NetherRealm is also adding a brand new Challenge Tower (as if the first one isn’t hard enough) for the more hardcore MK fans and is supposed to have 150 stages and add another six hours of gameplay.

Check out the full “Old-Skool” trailer after the break.
