The UK PlayStation Blog has posted a preview of Sony’s plans for Gamescom, the annual gaming expo in Cologne, Germany. The PlayStation media briefing will be held on Tuesday August 20 at 6pm BST (1pm Eastern / 10am Pacific), where they will be sharing “our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.”

If you’ve been raising your cord cutting initiative but haven’t been able to fully commit due to pay-per-view events from WWE and UFC to name a few then listen up. Sony has released a new and free app for the PlayStation 3 that will help you end your cable subscription. The new Live Events Viewer app gives PS3 owners the capability to subscribe to pay-per-view events like this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam without any cable subscription. While the app itself is free, you will still have to pay the normal fees that apply with the event. Sony hopes to expand the apps content with concerts, races, and more.
PAX Prime 2013 is coming soon, and studios are busy putting together their best possible showings. With this comes some great announcements, like this one from Spearhead Games, a Montreal-based indie studio made up of former Assassin’s Creed and Dead Space developers. Tiny Brains, a co-op action puzzle game, has been confirmed as a launch title for the PlayStation 4.
According to the press release, Tiny Brains “challenges players to escape a mad scientist’s nefarious puzzles as one of four mysteriously powerful lab rodents.” Tiny Brains will be coming to other platforms this fall, including Steam and possibly Xbox Live Arcade. If you’re coming to PAX in Seattle, you’ll be able to play Tiny Brains (with a DualShock 4!) at booth 6305. If you can’t make it, look for a hands-on preview from the show floor right here at Sony Rumors, and check out the latest screenshots of this cute puzzler:
Rey Jimenez, Producer of DuckTales Remastered at Capcom, recently sat down with the PlayStation Blog to talk about the classic game. While giving you plenty of reasons to buy the game, Jimenez also revealed a few interesting details like why the game would not feature a Platinum trophy when asked by a reader:
If we put a platinum trophy, there wouldn’t be enough points left for any other trophies. We did consider it for a short time though.
When asked further about it, Jimenez went on:
We looked into it, but there just wasn’t enough points to allocate. Different size games are allotted a different amount of points. We only have 315 points.
Jimenez is talking about the notion that depending on the scope and length of each game, Sony awards the title with a certain set of points which break down the trophy values and DuckTales Remastered simply did not fit the bill.
For two years, PlayStation 3 fans have been able to enjoy NFL Sunday Ticket by purchasing the service from DirecTV via a native app. While DirecTV customers would get a discount on the monthly for the highly desired service, anyone with a broadband access to get in on the NFL action though they would have to pay more. Now, according to Sony, the app which allowed you to watch any NFL game in session will no longer be available to PlayStation 3 owners this season though we assume he means indefinitely. Though Sony didn’t comment further on the matter, the reasoning behind it seems clear. Microsoft.

If you caught last week’s article, you know I mentioned my huge backlog of PlayStation games. I didn’t go into too much detail, but the unfortunate truth is that they are not all Indie games. Some games in my backlog are pretty major first party PlayStation 3 titles. Yes, Sarah has inspired me to admit to my shame as well. So this week I am finally getting around to playing inFamous, but I seem to be several years too late.
I’m sure you’re wondering if there is such as thing as too late with such acclaimed PlayStation 3 titles. I think there very well is, and I’m definitely having a hard time adjusting my mindset. With the PS4 right around the corner, some of these games have not stood the test of time as well as others. This is especially true with games in a series for me, and sometimes it’s easier to start with the most recent. Some people may cringe at the idea of playing a series out of order. I think it isn’t for everyone, but it can definitely give you that push you need in order to actually make it through the first games.

If you’re like me, you can’t wait for that first time you play a game you’ve been waiting for forever. Whether it’s a downloaded demo or at a friend’s house or tearing the seal off the jewel case at midnight of launch, that first experience is memorable. For an estimated 50,000 people, this year’s PAX Prime in Seattle, WA will be the first time they’ll get a chance to see and play the PlayStation 4. The Penny Arcade Expo takes place August 30 through September 2–Labor Day Weekend for our U.S. readers–and the SonyRumors team will be on the ground at the show to let you know all about the latest happenings.
Among the notable panels being presented at PAX is a postmortem on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us by game director Bruce Straley and creative director/writer Neil Druckmann. “Pitching The Last of Us” will take place in the Pegasus Theater on Friday at 2:30pm; here are the details of what will be presented:

Shinji Mikami is known as the father of the modern survival horror games and is creator of the Resident Evil franchise. In addition to the world of Umbrella, Mikami has also worked on Dino Crisis, Viewtiful Joe, Devil May Cry, and Ace Attorney. After working for more nearly two decades for Capcom, Mikami decided to leave and start his own studio, called Tango Gameworks, where he is working on a new survival horror game called The Evil Within. While we don’t have a lot of information on the yet-to-be-released game, we do know that it will be released sometime in 2014 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. With details still light on the mysterious game, the leaked gameplay footage, which can be found after the jump, should give you a glimpse of the world that you’ll be partaking in.
In my last editorial, I talked about what I needed to do in order to get ready for the next generation consoles and all the pretty PS4 games that are coming out this holiday. One of them was catching up on my gaming shame list, which will by far be the most difficult one to accomplish. Why, you ask? Well, mostly because I have zero lack of control when it comes to buying games and resisting sales. I don’t know what it is about video games that makes them almost unavoidable to me when they go on sale, or come out with a great looking collectors edition, but I have the tendency to pick things up when I have oodles and oodles of unplayed games at home anyway. Sometimes I feel more like a collector than a gamer, and that makes me sad. There are so many amazing games out there to play, and I have a lot of them, but I find myself staring at the shelves of jewel cases, having no idea where to start.
So, I’ve decided I need to make myself accountable with you guys, so I can get through at least 50% of the 33(!!!) Playstation games I have yet to finish or – gasp – even start. And what better place than here!
It isn’t uncommon among friends and fellow gamers to discuss what games you’re playing. Personally, I love to hear what everyone is playing so I have a better lead on what I may enjoy! With that being said, I would like to make this my little place to share all my PlayStation gaming endeavors of the week.
Recently, I have accumulated quite the backlog of PlayStation Network games due to their fabulous sales. So for the last couple of weeks I’ve been playing and streaming some of the coolest and most rage inducing indie games in my library. My most recent purchase and what has really stood out this week is Cloudberry Kingdom.
While it may seem that Final Fantasy XIV has been in beta for only a few months, the truth is that the game has been in beta for years. After a horrible launch in September of 2010, the game continued to be plagued with core issues like combat and questing. This eventually led Square Enix to completely overhaul the game starting in 2011 and we’re now just beginning to see the fruits of this from the current closed beta, available on PC and PS3. Like all betas, Final Fantasy 14 is having its fair share of ups with wide improvements compared to the original game and some not-so-glorious moments.
One such problem plaguing beta testers is area attacks of monsters and the damage that is applied from them. In other words, while a player might feel like they’re safe from battle and far enough from the monster, the game engine internally has drawn out a much larger damage area, thus leading to deaths of players when they thought they were safe. Final Fantasy 14 Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida addressed this and other game related news, after the jump.
Things continue to get better for the PlayStation camp. At Comic-Con, a Sony official went on record that PlayStation 3 headsets will be compatible with the PlayStation 4. While we’ve known for some time that like the PS3, the PS4 would also include Bluetooth which meant any of your off the shelf Bluetooth headsets would work with the console, we never knew the state of headsets specifically designed for the PS3. Now we know that whether it be the basic PS3 wireless USB headset or the more premium Pulse Elite Headsets, compatibility with not be an obstacle for would be up graders. The same however cannot be said for Xbox 360 owners, looking to go to the Xbox One.
