Way Of The Samurai 4 Exclusive to PlayStation 3

Earlier today, XSEED Games announced that they will be publishing Spike and Acquire’s Way of the Samurai 4 exclusively  on the PlayStation 3. The sandbox-style choose your own samurai game is going to be released fully uncut and uncensored according to XSEED.

I think I just peed my pants!

In Way of the Samurai 4, Japan is at it’s beginning stages of globalization; finally opening its gates to foreign traders. Players will be cast as a nameless samurai who happens to come upon the town of Amihama where a resistance group opposed to foreigners have begun their small, albeit bloody revolution.

It’s up to the players whether they will join the foreigners, the resistance group, or somewhere in between as a peacekeeper (oftentimes through violent means). They can also muck about town and spend time with the people, gamble at local dens, learn English and hang around the foreigners, and even romance a lady or two in Amihama.

Like the first three Way of the Samurai games, the player’s character is fully customizable. Players can choose from a number of face and hair styles, clothing, items, and weapons that fit their mood and play style. It will also feature multiple endings and game paths depending on the players choice of faction. As well, there have been rumblings that Amihama will be twice or even three times the size of the towns from older games.

Amazon Instant Video Launches for the PlayStation 3

Today, Sony and Amazon announced the Amazon Instant Video application for the PlayStation 3. Available as a free download, the new app gives PS3 users one more video service to choose from, where they can buy and rent movies and TV shows. Unlike the Video Unlimited app from Sony, Amazon Instant Video is purely based on streaming where even purchased content is only viewable via streaming. This can be a benefit for those with low hard drive space but maybe a downer for when your internet goes down. Now if you happen to have Amazon Prime which gives you two-day shipping on most items, there are additional perks for you to find here as well.

Should You Buy ‘Journey?’

Videogames at their worst are trivial and unfulfilling distractions, used purely for entertainment, and tossed aside seconds after completion, never to be looked at again. However, at their very best, videogames can be genuinely inspiring works of art, things that elicit discussion and awe whenever mentioned while still remaining fun to play. These are games after all. And while a lot of talk has floated around lately about how much of a game Journey really is, there is no doubt in my mind that Journey represents the very best that videogames have to offer, simultaneously innovating and inspiring during the memorable, albeit short, trip through its excellently-crafted world.

It’s not an exaggeration when I say that Journey is unlike any other game I’ve ever played. Everything in the game feels deliberate. The developers at thatgamecompany have really crafted one of the tightest game experiences ever, where no second feels wasted or unnecessary. Journey doesn’t have any dialogue or any traditional exposition, nor does it have any sort of combat or real conflict. The heart of Journey lies in exploration and movement.

The premise behind Journey is simple: get your character from point A to point B while occasionally solving simple puzzles. Your character can jump, float, and use the wind to glide across the often vast landscapes; though unlike most games that focus on movement, very little skill is necessary to accomplish your goal. Still, thatgamecompany manages to make the movement feel intensely satisfying, and the details in how your character moves or how the wind sometimes blows in the direction you travel to give you a slight boost of speed help players get lost in the beautifully designed world.

EVE Online and Dust 514 To Interact Seamlessly

A few months ago, we interviewed Sveinn J. Kjarval, EVE Online’s Community Developer, about CCP’s upcoming Dust 514 and talked about how EVE and Dust will co-exist in the same universe and that decisions made in EVE Online have an impact in the battlefields of Dust 514.

At CCP’s recent EVE Fanfest, the company showed exactly how seamlessly each game interacts with each other. In a video called “Orbital Bombardment,” one screen had a massive planetary war underway in Dust 514 with live players battling for supremacy while the other screen showed an EVE Online player ordering one of his battlecruisers to fire at a specific location on the battlefield below. Everything happening in real-time adds another amazing layer of tactical options available for DUST 514 and EVE Online players in their cross-platform war.

DUST 514 is coming to the PlayStation 3 as a free-to-play massively multiplayer online first person shooter later this year.

First Look: LittleBigPlanet Karting

In somewhat of a surprise announcement, Sony recently released the first trailer to LittleBigPlanet Karting, a charming Playstation 3 kart racer based in the LittleBigPlanet universe set to release sometime this year. Sony announced that United Front Games, developers of Playstation-exclusive kart racer ModNation Racers, will be handling LBP Karting’s development, while Media Molecule will continue to focus on main franchise LBP titles.

The short trailer showcases the traditional LittleBigPlanet aesthetic, along with splitscreen multiplayer races and battles, kart customization, and a glimpse into the different gameplay styles the game looks to offer. From initial trailer impressions, the game, expectedly, seems very similar to ModNation Racers; however, how different the two games will be remains to be seen.

According to Senior Producer at United Front Game James Grieve, the creation system looks to keep many of the same tools from the traditional LBP games while also adding to it to accommodate for the 3D and kart racing elements. Still, Grieves told the Playstation Blog that fans of the creation tools from the older games should feel comfortable with the creation in LBP Karting.

Our goal with LBP Karting has been fairly simple – provide a fast-paced experience that captures the best of classic karting gameplay, married with the unbridled creativity of LBP. This new adventure will be accessible to players of all ages and have all of the variety necessary to satisfy both the hardcore and more casual players.

This is an LBP game, so we could never talk about it without mentioning the Create tools. LBP Karting is set in an entirely 3D world that will enable players to create rich and varied gameplay experiences. Tons of familiar LBP gadgets will be present, along with a new toolbox specifically tailored to allow for building in LBP Karting’s 3D world. Along with fan-favorite racing and battle modes, players will be able to modify the rules of the game itself to create completely new modes and challenges. All of this is wrapped up in a community experience that should have LBP fans feeling right at home.

LBP Karting is one of two LittleBigPlanet releases set for this year, the other being LittleBigPlanet in development for the Playstation Vita, which is being developed by Tarsier and Double Eleven Studios. Be sure to keep an eye out for both titles as development passes.

The multiple times delayed game which was originally announced in 2006 and now finished and released by Ubisoft Shanghai has met with mixed reviews since its March 7th release on Xbox 360. Meet KARA, the Latest Tech Demo From Quantic Dream, Creators of Heavy Rain

Seemingly out of  nowhere, Quantic Dream, the creators behind the award-winning and PlayStation 3-exclusive Heavy Rain, have just released a new tech demo. Up until now, Heavy Rain was held up as of the darling of PlayStation 3, blending in a new way of story telling with near photorealistic graphics with lifelike emotions expressed on each characters face in real time. Now, the famous developers have a new tech demo for you to feast your eyes upon.

Their latest footage “is a prototype running in real-time on PlayStation 3” which features a lifelike android, called KARA, akin to the Borg Queen or KOS-MOS from Xenosaga. In the video, we see the final stages of KARA being built while her final programming is being completed. Much like Heavy Rain, though the visuals are dazzling and indeed surpass the previous title, the real focus is once again the emotions of the character, their expressions, and lifelike movements. The visuals are truly meant to drive the narrative and actually take away from the technology which too often is the focus of the game and instead, make you care about the characters.

It’s unclear if this footage will actually be part of any future game design, or if it’s purely meant to show off the latest engine and game creation techniques from Quantic Dream while they work on a new game, which is surely in the works. If it turns out to be anything like the footage we had seen prior to Heavy Rain’s release, you can bet that you will see KARA appear in some shape or form in next PlayStation 3 exclusive title from Quantic Dream.

Video awaits you, after the jump.

Upcoming PS3-Exclusive ‘Dust 514’ Now Free-to-Play, Vita Version a ‘Companion App’

Upcoming PS3-exclusive MMO first-person shooter Dust 514 doesn’t have a release date quite yet, but it is going to be free to download and play. Developer CCP recently announced to Eurogamer that their massively online first-person shooter set in the Eve Online universe will be free to download on PSN.

Originally slated to have a price somewhere from $10 to $20, instead CCP is offering the game for free, with in-game purchases being the primary source of funding. However, executive producer Brandon Laurino is adamant in his stance that those purchases won’t be necessary in order to be successful.

It’s very important as we take steps into this topic to unambiguously state that it is not a pay to win game. There is no micro-transaction that you can do that gives you an unfair advantage over someone who hasn’t paid anything. It’s the classic micro-transaction dynamic of, ‘I can pay and get this item,’ or, ‘I can invest my time and get this item.’ But neither of those options will give me an unfair advantage over the other.”

Players will be able to buy currency bundles anywhere from $1 to $100, which can go towards the purchase of things like cosmetic changes, character re-specs, and variants of weapons that are supposedly not stronger than their freely available counterparts. While maps won’t be available for purchase, Laurino told Eurogamer that all of the maps would be available for players who choose not to spend money.

Aliens: Colonial Marines Preview

Ever since watching Aliens in the theatres, I’d always wondered what it would be like to be one of Apone’s Colonial Marines as they fought to survive the xenomorph-infested LV-426. Sure, there were the Alien vs. Predator games, and sure they were plenty fun, but once I finished the Marine campaign, the Predator and Alien campaigns definitely weren’t up to par. To be honest, I just bought the game to play as the Colonial Marine.

Picture this: You and your squad have just entered the darkness that is LV-426, the long hallways of cold black metal and the eerie silence surround you and keep you on edge. Suddenly the loud ‘ping’ coming from your motion tracker pierces your ears. There’s something or things coming, and it’s coming fast….

Sony Santa Monica helping to complete ‘The Last Guardian’

For those of you feeling apprehensive about Team Ico’s next and often-delayed project The Last Guardian, you can now sleep just a little easier. In an interview with Wired, Sony Senior Vice President Shuhei Yoshida provided a few details about the development process behind Team Ico’s highly anticipated game.

Yoshida divulged to Wired that members of Sony Santa Monica, among others such as Worldwide Studios, have gone to Japan to help Team Ico on the completion of The Last Guardian. Sony Santa Monica is most famously responsible for developing the God of War franchise as well as collaborating with other studios on various Sony exclusives such as the Pixeljunk series and most recently Twisted Metal. No details were provided on what exactly Sony Santa Monica members would be doing to aid in the development of the game.

Late last year, Sony also confirmed rumors that lead creative director (and the man behind cult classics like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus) Fumito Ueda had left the company. Most people had assumed that Ueda would not be staying on to finish The Last Guardian; however, Yoshida confirmed in the interview that Ueda would be staying on to finish the project.

There was a rumor that [creative director Fumito] Ueda had left the company, which we confirmed. But its not like he left the making of The Last Guardian. He’s on top of the game and coming into the office. He could be the person who’s in the office for the longest time. The difference is that he used to be a regular employee. But now we have a contract to define his role. It’s a very special contribution and role that he plays and we agreed; let’s make it more official, more special. That’s the only difference.

Yoshida goes on to mention that while progress on the game is being made and that it is currently playable, The Last Guardian is still far enough from the finish that a launch date can’t be discussed.

But the progress is slow and sometimes the team has to go back and review things. There’s a vision that we want to realize but it’s very, very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process. At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level — it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.

With Ueda still on the project and help from outside agencies like Sony Santa Monica, The Last Guardian is still looking like one of the most anticipated Playstation 3 titles; however, whether or not the game releases this year still remains to be seen.

Retro City Rampage Preview – Coming To A PS3 And Vita Near You

Originally only to be released for Xbox Live Acade and WiiWare, Indie mega-game Retro City Rampage is now set to release on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in May of this year. Announced as part of the PAX 10 in 2010, Retro City Rampage is an 8-bit game that plays like an open-world modern shooter. The game takes the best parts of classic and modern games and puts them into 8-bit form.

I had been following the game’s development since its first announcement almost two years ago. A few months ago, I had a chat with VBlank Entertainment’s Brian Provinciano, the creator and developer of Retro City Rampage and he game me an overview of what the game was about.

“It’s kind of like Super Mario meets GTA meets a celebration of the entire history of video games. So steal cars, shoot people, jump on them like Mario stomps Goombas, collect coins, collect powerups and you get the idea.”

“Journey” Development Complete, hits Playstation Store March 13

If you were wondering when you could finally get your hands on highly-anticipated PSN game Journey, the wait is finally over. Jenova Chen, lead Creative Director at thatgamecompany, announced over at the Playstation Blog that their newest game will be available through the Playstation Store on March 13 for $14.99. Journey is thatgamecompany’s third game, after flOw in 2007 and the critically-acclaimed Flower in 2009.

Chen also provides a few details regarding what players can expect from the game, which has largely been shrouded in mystery since its announcement. Journey, much like thatgamecompany’s previous outings, is largely experiential and played completely online.

“Twisted Metal” Server Status Update (updated)

Taking to his Twitter account like he normally does, David Jaffe gave the latest rounds of updates in regards to Twisted Metal server status and its online component. As a recap, since it’s Valentine’s Day launch, Twisted Metal fans have been reporting issues with online match making. The errors which are plaguing users tend to appear as a ‘cannot connect’ issue and can happen in any mode. One cause of this has been narrowed down to a code glitch where when a user enters a full game and instead of being notified of a full room, is instead told that the server ‘cannot connect.’

To address this, Sony is taking down the servers shortly for  15 minutes to push a patch which should hopefully address this code glitch. Once in place, Sony will once again restore the servers and begin assessing the true ‘cannot connect’ error and begin to work on a fix. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, it’s always refreshing to see someone like David so passionate about his work and giving it to players straight.

Help with that. Thx for sticking it out with us- Twisted fans are not only bad ass sick fucks, they are also- mostly!-,understanding gamers
