Sony’s Project Morpheus to Use OLED Displays

Sony_PS4_Morpheus

Morpheus, the Oculus Rift-like prototype headset from Sony is part of a ambitious future that Sony envisions for PlayStation 4 and potentially beyond. Like Oculus Rift (recently purchased by Facebook), Sony believes that Morpheus can bring an entirely new type of gaming to PlayStation while also enhancing current games with a degree of immersion not seen before. Part of that is by creating the illusion that you as the gamer are in that world. To help achieve that, you need all the visual quality that your eye can handle and what better to provide this visual fidelity than an OLED display?

Why the PlayStation Now 4-Hour Pricing is Actually a Good Deal

PlayStation_Now_Rental

If you were to believe IGN, Polygon, and Kotaku,  you’d walk away a bit disappointed in the pricing scheme that Sony has presented for PlayStation Now. As a quick recap, PlayStation Now is the game streaming service that’s gone into beta which will allow PS4 users to stream PS3 games. The service will eventually make its way to PS3 and PS Vita before taking a bigger leap to Sony 4K televisions and smartphone and tablets. As it stands, there is no Netflix like pricing but Sony is said to be looking at into offering a subscription based model. That means till such a time arrives which I don’t believe will be till 2015, games must be rented on an individual bases.

Later today, we’ll have a more in depth article about the pricing provided by PlayStation Now but for this article, I wanted to specifically focus on the 4-hour model provided by Sony and why it’s actually a pretty fair deal.

Sony Sees 2014 “As a Year of Investment” on PSN

PSN_Logo_Flair

The PlayStation 4 has been quite popular with consumers since its launch in late 2013. Thanks to high demand, the PS4 along with Sony Pictures and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was able to help swing Sony into a surprise Q1 2014 profit. One of the things that’s made the PS4 popular has been a far more robust PlayStation Network that’s embraced gaming trends like live streaming to Twitch and Ustream from launch. These, among other features and a greater than expected number of PS4 users, are making Sony rethink their PSN strategy and to invest more into the platform.

PS4 and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Help Sony Swing a Profit

Sony_Logo_Cash

To say Sony has been having financial troubles this past decade would be putting it lightly. Thanks to stiff competition from Apple and Samsung and shift in consumer taste, Sony has been forced to layoff over 1,000 employees just this year after having laid off 10,000 employees the year prior. The company has also sold off VAIO, their PC division and even spun off Bravia in case their television business completely collapses. Things however aren’t all doom and gloom for the once electronic giant. PlayStation continues to be a loved brand and their latest installment, the PS4, continues to outpace the Xbox One.

Sony Pictures has always been a bright spot for Sony with franchises like Spider-Man, Men in Black, and now the Jump Street series which tend to bring with them big numbers. Thanks to SP and PlayStation, Sony was able to report a surprise Q1 2014 profit in what would have otherwise been another loss for the company.
