In today’s world, speed is everything and we want things NOW versus 30 seconds from now. This is especially true to us impatient gamers who want to just pop in a game and start playing. Of course, a lot has changed from 10 years ago and with the new generation of game consoles, this idea is a bit more complicated. All games have day 1 patches which are usually required before being able to play the game. To make makes a bit more complicated, with either the PS4 or Xbox One, even physical games on Blu-ray need to be installed. This is due to the large file sizes of games and the slower read speed of optical drives, versus the hard drive which reads (loads) much faster. However, similarities between the two consoles end there as a new report indicates that Xbox One games take over 10x longer to install than their PS4 counterpart.

One of the great features of the PS4 is the companion PlayStation app, which can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices for free. The app allows you to chat with PSN friends, check out trophies, and make purchases from PSN to be queued up on your PS4 and ready for your consuming pleasure by the time you’ve arrived home. If you’re still wondering what else the app can do, you can read our more extensive PlayStation App overview or watch our PlayStation App preview video. Now, much like the North America, prior to the PS4 launch in the UK, gamers can head to the App Store or Google Play to download the free app and get themselves acquainted with all it has to offer.
When the PS4 launched nearly two weeks ago in North America, early adaptors had access to 11 entertainment apps which included heavy hitters like Netflix and Hulu. Now that the system is nearing its launch in Europe, Sony has revealed that the PS4 will launch with 18 apps in those territories. The usual suspects include Lovefilm, Demand5, BBC iPlayer, and VidZone. After the jump, the full list of apps and exact county list await you.
Klei Entrainment is the studio behind indie titles such as Eets, Shank, Mark of the Ninja and Don’t Starve. These indie devs, who got their start in the PC world, have garnered quite a loyal fan base and respect with unique games that have won them awards like the Golden Joystick for Indie Game of the Year and the Canadian Video Game Awards to name a few. While they might not be known that well in the PlayStation community, that will likely change in 2014 when Don’t Starve will make its console debut on the PlayStation 4. For those not familiar, you play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist trapped in the wilderness, who must use his wits to withstand the environment if he ever hopes to return home. Throughout the game, Wilson encounters many foes and an unlikely friend, Chester, the adorable dog-like creature who helps you carry additional inventory. As they put it:
Chester is by far the most popular character from the game. He’s a furry creature who can be summoned when you find his “Eyebone.” As long as Wilson carries the EyeBone, Chester will bounce and follow the character loyally, and can be used as a moving storage unit for any tools and items you might find in your travels. In the lonely, lonely world of Don’t Starve, he may be your only friend.
With fans clamoring for more from the Don’t Starve world, Klei Entertainment has teamed Erick Scarecrow, the creator behind ESC-Toy Ltd. which created those awesome and highly-stylized Nathan Drake vinyls (pictured after the jump) last year among others to create a Chester plush via Kickstarter.
The PlayStation 3 has always been regarded as one of the best home theater machines. Throughout its lifespan, the powerful console was able to satisfy home theater aficionados with support for Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray Live, and a host of audio codecs like DTS and Dolby TrueHD. With the launch of the PS4, Sony hopes to continue the tradition and that’s already apparent with the console supporting DTS-HD Master Audio|7.1 decoder, a first for consumer electronics device.
The PlayStation 4 ships with a 500GB hard drive which isn’t too bad for the average gamer. However, if you consider yourself a hardcore gamer who plans on purchasing a lot of content and/or are looking to go exclusive with digital downloads, then a 500GB might start to seem smaller. This is especially true when you consider that many AAA PS4 games will near 50GB. Luckily, Sony has once again made upgrading the PS4 hard drive a none issue like the PS3. While maybe not as easy as the PS3, upgrading the hard drive on the PS4 is not an especially hard affair or time consuming. If you’re looking for a more visual guide, our video above takes out the standard PS4 hard drive and upgrades it to a WD Blue 1TB drive while those looking for written steps can find them, after the jump.
Later tonight, Sony will be releasing the PS4 System Software Update 1.51 for your downloading pleasure. As the number indicates, the update will be a minor one for the recently launched console though it will feature minor UI tweaks as well as the generic and vague bug fixes and system stability improvements. After the jump, the PS4 System Software Update 1.51 details await you.
Welcome to the PlayStation Store update for November 19, 2013. Even though the PlayStation 4 released last Friday, this update is still packed full of deals and new content for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Announced last week at the eve of the release of the PlayStation 4, The Last Of Us: Left Behind DLC is up for Pre-Order today. Take on the role as either a cop or a racer in Need for Speed Rivals which also hits the store for the PlayStation 3.
PlayStation 4 users only have one new release this week in NBA Live 14. Several anticipated games drop on the network this week including Contrast (PS3 Version), Stick It To the Man, and Aquapazza. There is also a sale on titles by Atlus this week with deep discounts on several of their games including some in the fantastic Persona series.
Finally, PlayStation Plus users will be receiving both Binary Domain(PlayStation 3) and Oddworld: Strangers Wrath (PlayStation Vita) for free along with many discounts on several games. Keep reading to see a complete list of content available on the PlayStation Store this week!
We know you wanted it so who are we to keep it away from you? If you want to see the PS4 unboxed like no other, then check out or video unboxing. And trust me when I say like no other because I bet you’ve yet to see a headless unboxing of the new, million plus selling console and that’s exactly what we have lined up for you.
Because why not, I decided to size up the Dualshock 4 controller for the PS4 against the Dulashock 3 which replaced the original PS3 launch controller, the Sixaxis. As a recap, the PS3 originally came with the Sixaxis controller which lacked the rumble pack thanks to a dispute between Sony and Emersson, the company who held patents for the technology. Sony would eventually settle the suit for $90 million and bring back rumble to the PS3 and call the controller the Dualshock 3. With a new generation of PlayStation, we also have a new generation of controllers, the Dualshock 4. Our video compares the three controllers.
One of the neat features of the PlayStation 4 that’s been underplayed is the ability to control the console via voice commands. As you’d expect, you will need the PlayStation Camera to make this happen but once connected, the setup and usage of the system is fairly easy. While the list of commands might not be extensive yet, there is still some great features in there like easily jumping to the main menu, taking screenshots, and putting the console on standby mode. After the jump, we’ve put together a PlayStation Camera voice command list for you.
Now that the launch day of the PS4 in the US and Canada is over, Sony has been running the numbers and they don’t disappoint. Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios has confirmed on Twitter that they have surpassed one million sales already. It was critical that Sony quenched sufficient appetite during launch to gain as much of a foothold ahead of its rival, and the PS4 isn’t slacking. Read on to find out more…
Just a quick heads up for all you midnight PS4 owners. PSN is currently down which will stop you from gaming online or downloading the required PS4 System Update 1.5. The error in question seems to be NW-31453-6 and the message:
The network connection has been lost.
PlayStation 4 launches in just moments on the East Coast, and Spike and GameTrailers are presenting PS4 All Access: Greatness Awaits. We’ve already seen a new Uncharted game announced, but we also have a new trailer–and a release date–for Sucker Punch’s Infamous: Second Son.
