One of the great things about the PlayStation 4 is the ability to interact with the device and services on it via the PlayStation App. Available on the App Store and Google Play, the free app allows iOS and Android devices to connect to it with a host of features like chatting and game purchases. Our video above gives you a tour of the app and helps you navigate some of its features.
No one was more disappointed than I was when the official PS4 FAQ on the PlayStation Blog was updated last week to omit Tiny Brains, from developer Spearhead Montreal, from the launch day lineup in North America. Back at PAX, I fell in love with the cute, curious co-op puzzle game from a team of former-AAA game designers, and it was one of my most anticipated games to download come November 15. Sadly, we’ll have to wait just a bit longer: Tiny Brains will be coming out November 26. Only 11 days separate your brand new consoles from a game I enjoyed so much, I wanted to go back for more.
So I did, when Spearhead and TriplePoint Games invited press to a preview event in San Francisco just a few weeks back. One of the reasons for the delay of Tiny Brains is that Spearhead is nailing down the online portion of the game, according to Polygon’s conversation with the team’s co-founder Atul Nath Mehra. While we didn’t test the online functionality at our preview event, co-founder and game director Malik Boukhira did lead us through an updated version of the playable PAX demo, along with a few other neat standouts that hadn’t been shown just yet.
With the PlayStation 4 set to launch later tonight or early tomorrow, depending on how you look at it, it seemed like a good time to unbox the all new Dualshock 4 controller. Those familiar with PlayStation controllers will note the similarities between it and previous generations. While most of the layout is in line with the Dualshock 3, Sony has changed a few things around and left behind a few buttons like the Start and Select.
Friday will be an important day for PlayStation. Every new PS4 owner will set up, sit down, and start gaming as soon as they can. This is very exciting! But that also means that every new PS4 owner will be looking to get the most out of their gaming experience, which means the servers will be slammed when everyone tries to download the already-announced patch bringing the PS4 System Software Version 1.50 in tho the mix. It’s also worth noting that the PS4 System Software Version 1.50 is mandatory so whether you like it or not, you’re going to be downloading it and if past experiences hold true, download times will be slow on launch date as Sony’s servers get slammed. Luckily, Sony is ready for it.
Sony will allow you to download this patch early onto a USB drive and, come Friday, install it from there. It’s like your very own shortcut! Read up on how to make it happen after the jump.
With a new CEO coming to Microsoft soon, the shortlisted candidates are revealing pieces of their own vision for the company. One of the proposals said to be under consideration is the sale of the Xbox division. Yes, you read that correctly. Xbox might be one of Microsoft’s 16 billion-dollar businesses but it is not guaranteed a spot in the company’s near future. The company is currently transforming into a ‘devices and services’ company and Xbox doesn’t ‘support its core business’. If the next CEO does sell Xbox, what does this mean for PlayStation’s future?
The PlayStation App, Sony’s official mobile companion to PSN and the very-soon-to-be-released PlayStation 4, is now available for download, according to Polygon and various other outlets. You can find it on the iTunes App Store or Google Play.
Announced in February, the PlayStation App allows you to access your PSN Account on compatible mobile devices. From the app, you can add friends on PSN, send voice, image, and text messages to those friends, and–when the PS4 launches this Friday in North America–view game footage and livestreams shared by PlayStation 4 users.
Welcome to the PlayStation Store update for November 12, 2013. This is the final store update featuring only the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Make sure you check back on Friday for a special store update for the launch of the PlayStation 4. XCOM: Enemy Within releases today for the PlayStation 3 and is a standalone expansion to last year’s fantastic XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
The PlayStation Vita continues to receive AAA titles on a regular basis and this week owners of both the handheld and the PlayStation 3 receive Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition which includes both the main game and all of the DLC.
Finally, PlayStation Plus users will be receiving ibb & obb (PlayStation 3) for free along with many discounts on several games. Keep reading to see a complete list of content available on the PlayStation Store this week!
Sony was faced with a tremendous backlash when they announced that the PlayStation 4 would launch without MP3 and DLNA support. While both are highly useful features, they’re likely not features that are used by the masses. Especially DLNA which requires the networking of your computer with DLNA software for media sharing. Of course, the gamer crowd being the needy bunch that we are went on a giant temper tantrum with some crying:
‘I cancelled the pre-order’
Some conspiracy theorist went one step further, believing that this was Sony’s way of pushing their music streaming service, Music Unlimited. The subscription based service allows you to listen to millions of tracks on plethora of platforms like iOS, Android, and PlayStation. The services then takes one step further on the PS4, allowing you stream music during gameplay, something that the PS3 did not offer. According to Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida there is a simpler explanation to all of this and that they were:
caught off guard
The good news is that Sony has heard you loud and clear and that these features are headed to the PS4.
One of the big features of the PlayStation 4 will be the ability to link your PlayStation Vita to it for features like Remote Play which allow you to stream games from the powerful home console to the powerful portable console. In fact, if you’re down a controller, the Vita can also act as an additional Dualshock 4. Of course one caveat with the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U is that they are not backwards compatible. This means that any gamer who wants to play previous generation games will need to keep PS3 around. With the Vita requiring to be registered to a console, would this mean that you have to either choose between a PS4/Vita or PS3/Vita combo? Not so says Sony.
While the PlayStation 4 will be able to play games off of a Blu-ray disc like its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, it still represents the most forward looking machine from Sony. In fact, the PS4 from its core was designed to embrace digital downloads. This can be seem in the console’s ability to allow you to play a game while it downloads. In previous generations, you’d have to wait for the download and install to finish before you could jump into the game’s world. To further push the convenience of digital downloads, the PS Vita and your iPhone/iPad or mobile device of choice can be turned into a remote control for the device thanks to a free app. The PlayStation App will even allow you to make purchases and begin the download on your PS4 and have it ready once you’ve arrived at your house or office. So this begs the question, will you buy your game of choice on Blu-ray disc or will you download a digital copy of the game?
After the jump, let’s further debate the pros and cons of each format.
Hey guys, it’s your boy Doc here with another unboxing for you guys. If you haven’t already, check out my Batman Arkham Origins Collector’s Edition unboxing for the PlayStation 3. Now for all you PlayStation 4 fans, I’m gonna unbox Call of Duty: Ghosts Prestige Edition. Lets talk, after the jump.
For most of us, $399.99 is a lot of money. And if you’re an early adopter of the PlayStation 4, chances are that’s not all you’ll be spending–there are games, accessories, apps, and more that will tempt many of us to reach Xbox One levels of spending. One added cost of the PlayStation ecosystem this generation, for those interested in online multiplayer, is a PlayStation Plus subscription. If you choose the most cost-effective plan, that will set you back at least another $49.99 in the US. All told, a new console generation can be a tab expensive.
