Consider the following question: you’re a brilliant scientist… what’s the very first thing you do? If your answer is ‘genetically enhance a collection of lab mice with telekinetic abilities and run them through a gauntlet of increasingly more difficult and dangerous mazes for your own amusement,’ then Tiny Brains from Montreal-based Spearhead Games is exactly what you’re looking for when the PlayStation 4 launches November 15.
On the sixth floor of the Washington State Trade & Convention Center, the team from Spearhead, composed of former Ubisoft, EA, and Square Enix developers, brought in teams of three at a time to show off their PS4 launch title. What seems at first to be a cute, colorful puzzle game quickly gives way to a nuanced and deep co-op strategy session between you, two fellow players, and a member of the dev team. Each player’s ‘tiny brain’ has a different kinetic ability: force (push), vortex (pull), teleport (swap places with an object), and create (deploy a new movable object). Using these abilities, each of the four players must work together to solve puzzle chambers designed to require the use of most or all of your player abilities.
Gamers in Europe got excited when they found out at Gamescom in Germany that they would get FIFA 14 free with Xbox One pre-orders, but are now disappointed by a clarification from Microsoft that this would involve launch day console packages only. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe vice president Jim Ryan calls the pre-order promotion ‘…a bit odd.’

The PlayStation 4 has been on fire ever since the console debuted in Spring. With each show, including E3, Gamescom, and now PAX, Sony has continued to shine and has given gamers more reasons to purchase the console when it launches on November 15th. Like any console launch, demand will likely outstrip supply and lead to periods where finding the console will be near impossible. Amazon for its part has put up multiple bundles for order, only to have them sell out shortly. Now, the online retailer has a fresh deal that’s in stock and reader for launch date. The PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 Bundle is priced at $459 and features the PS4 and an additional Dualshock 4 controller. If you’ve been itching for a PS4, now is the time to pre-order as inventory will likely disappear quickly.
SCE Japan Studio is a busy and bustling place to be right now. While much smaller than other first party studios like Santa Monica Studios and Naughty Dog, the Japan-based developers are working on multiple titles currently which include Puppeteer for the PS3, Knack for the PS4, and The Last Guardian. According to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda, The Last Guardian is still in development though no details were given in regards to the platform. While the title was originally announced for the PS3 nearly four years ago, the game has been delayed numerous times. This has gotten many in the industry to assume that Sony eventually shifted the game’s development to the PS4 though no proof of this actually exists. What we have learned is why theres been such little news on the highly-anticipated title.
One of the great announements from Sony’s Gamescom 2013 keynote by president Andrew House was the pathway for gamers to upgrade select PS3 titles for their PS4 counterpart for a fraction of the price. Two big publishers, Activision and EA, are already onboard with the program with the former company announcing that, when gamers purchase Call of Duty: Ghosts for the PS3, they can later on redeem a downloadable copy for the PS4 for only $10. Other games such as Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 will also partake in the program. Now UK managing director Fergal Gara has revealed that it is up to the individual publisher to establish the upgrade pricing.

Sony’s Gamescom conference unveiled a lot of creative new titles for PS Vita and PS4, almost two dozen in total. One that caught a lot of peoples attention was Rime from Tequila Works, makers of last year’s PC and 360 shooter Deadlight. Michael Denny, senior vice president of Sony Worldwide Studios, described the game as “an open-world adventure game which takes us on a voyage of discovery and danger” to discover the mystery of “civilization monumentally powerful but inexplicably brought to ruin.” Check out some screenshots after the break.
Resogun is from a company called Housemarque, based in Helsinki, Finland, the team responsible for titles such as Dead Nation, Super Stardust HD, and Super Stardust Delta. After working on the Super Stardust franchise for quite some time, the small team wanted to do something different while sticking to the genre they loved. Taking that into account, they came up with Resogun which according to Mikael Haveri from Housemarque:
adds a twist to the shooter genre, and while being very much a ‘spiritual successor’
Resogun takes its cue from classic arcade titles such as Defender, Data Storm, or Japanese shmups like DoDonPachi and Death Smiles and plays like an old school 2D shooters. While a lot of details still remain under wraps for the game, we do know that it will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive and will be in Full HD and at 60 frames per second. After the jump, our Resogun HD screenshot gallery await you.
Despite having the initial PlayStation 4 announcement in late Spring with a full showing of the console and its games at E3, the PS4 dashboard has continued to be a bit of mystery. While we’ve seen little pieces of it from concept art and short videos, we’ve never been able to get a full glimpse of it, working in real time. Now, thanks to Sony’s Shushei Yoshida from Gamescom 2013, we have a much better idea of how the entire PS4 dashboard will work and the first thing you’ll notice is speed. Yoshida is seen navigating throughout the dashboard, then bringing up a live stream of Killzone: Shadow Fall, and eventually joining the same game with just a few clicks in as smooth of a fashion as you can expect. While there is still a lot we don’t know about the PS4 dashboard, this video is the best example of what we can expect in the end from the PS4 and it’s damn good. The video awaits you, after the jump.
Sucker Punch, the developers behind inFamous and the upcoming inFamous: Second Son seem to be on a roll. After giving us a preview of the Dualshock 4 and how developers like them were able to give their input to Sony for the now finished controller, they’ve now decided to release some new screenshots for their highly anticipated title. While inFamous 1 and 2 were popular among the core PlayStation audience, the games never found a mass market appeal. With inFamous: Second Son, Sucker Punch seems to have the attention of the gaming community with a game that not only plays fantastically (they were kind enough to demo it for us at E3) but one that looks amazing as well. Maybe the series will finally get the attention it deserves on the PS4. After the jump, a new inFamous: Second Son HD screenshot gallery awaits you.
In case you missed it, Sony Computer Entertainment announced the release date of the PlayStation 4 at their Gamescom press conference in Cologne, Germany. After the break, see the when you can pick up the next generation of PlayStation gaming:
One of the surprise announcements from Sony at the Gamescom 2013 conference was a key partnership between PlayStation and 3rd party studios like EA and Activision where games who would purchase select PS3 titles would be rewarded if they wanted to buy the same title for the PlayStation 4. The games mentioned include heavy hitters like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4. Now, according to Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Call of Duty: Ghosts can be had for $10 on the PS4.
A lot has been said about the new Dualshock 4 controller for the PS4 and it’s all been praise. From better trigger buttons to a smoother D-pad and analogue sticks, the Dualshock 4 is jam packed full of new technology.
