Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton stepping down, joining Snapchat

Not a lot of details on this story yet but Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton (pictured right) who oversees Sony Pictures among other things is stepping down to join Span Inc., the company behind Snapchat. This is a big shift for Sony as Lynton was the man with a plan to help transition Sony Pictures into a healthier state.

I’m not sure about all the dots yet but there’s been a lot of rumble around Sony Pictures as of late with the division either going under the watchful eye of Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew Houseor perhaps being up for sale with CBS’s Leslie Moonves showing a lot of interest. I’m sure as the day and week progresses, we’ll find out a bit more about why Lynton decided to jump ship to a tech company though I doubt we’ll find out the real fate of Sony Pictures quite yet.

Post North Korean Hack, Sony Entertainment CEO Uses Fax Machine

Before you read the tweet below, I recommend reading North Korean Sony Pictures Hackers Still Out There‘ and ‘Apple’s Strong Stance on Privacy and Why Sony Must Follow.’ Now, what Sony Entertainment CEO, Michael Lynton, said at CodeMedia:

Apparently the audience laughed at the comment, when Lynton followed up with

 No, really.

Lynton went on to say

Slowing things down for a minute is not necessarily the worst thing.

I know this isn’t the tech division of Sony but really? Either Lynton is hyper paranoid and is also preparing for a Communist invasion (imagine the fun of dealing with a boss who is using a fax machine) or it tells you that a year later, top brass at SPE still have little confidence in their own network security. And Sony wants to push more services into the cloud. Ideally, after the cyberattack Sony Pictures fell victim to, you’d like the company to instill confidence in its employees and consumers – not stick their tail between their legs and whimper.

No, really – read ‘Apple’s Strong Stance on Privacy and Why Sony Must Follow.’

Michael Lynton to Stay As Sony Pictures CEO

Due to the disastrous cyber attack which rocked Sony Pictures in late 2014, there’s been some changes at the executive level. One such casualty was Amy Pascal, who found herself in middle of it all when her private emails with less-than-flattering language and attitude towards celebrities as well as the President of the United States was revealed. Pascal eventually stepped down from her position though she later clarified that she was ‘fired’ from that position.

With Pascal having signed a three-year contract with Sony Pictures which was set to expire this year and having been given a new production company right at the Sony Pictures campus in Culver City, I can’t say she’s doing too badly and rather, landed nicely for someone in her position. After her departure, all eyes were then on Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures, who saw the hacking incident unfold on his watch. Industry insiders wondered if Lynton would be another casualty of the attack and today we have that answer.

Michael Lynton Named CEO of Sony America

It seems that during this year, Kaz Hirai won’t be the only high profile Sony executive with a new position. Michael Lynton (pictured on the right), who became Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2004 and has seen tremendous success with The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Spider-Man and James Bond franchise has now been appointed as the CEO of Sony Corp. Given a few months to conduct the transition, Lynton will officially take control of Sony America on June 27th. Current Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer who was previously the CEO of Sony Music/BMG before taking control of the company in June 2005, commented on Lyntons appointment, stating:

Lynton is an incredibly accomplished executive who has distinguished himself in at least three different fields — entertainment, technology and publishing
